Mumbai 400 People Remove 2000 Kilograms Plastic During Juhu Beach Cleanup

Mumbai witnessed a significant environmental initiative on Wednesday as approximately 400 volunteers removed nearly two tonnes of plastic waste from Juhu Beach. Organised by Project Mumbai, the cleanup served as a curtain-raiser for the city’s inaugural Mumbai Climate Week, scheduled for February 2026. The event underscores the city’s growing engagement with sustainable urban practices and the mobilisation of civic society in environmental stewardship.

The volunteers included students, local residents, corporate participants, and municipal officials, all coordinated under Project Mumbai’s flagship programme, Jallosh: Clean Coasts, Restore The Shore. The campaign was conducted in partnership with the Maharashtra Department of Environment and Climate Change, UNICEF India, YuWaah’s Green Rising initiative, the state climate action cell, and the National Service Scheme across several colleges. In under two hours, participants collected 1,946 kilograms of plastic waste, earmarked for recycling into public amenities. Beyond waste removal, the exercise emphasised awareness-building on sustainable lifestyles aligned with India’s Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) and the state’s Majhi Vasundhara programme for green living. Activities included shoreline restoration, waste segregation, and interactive sessions to promote eco-conscious behaviours.

“Local action generates global impact. Initiatives like these reflect how communities can co-create a greener future,” noted an official from UNICEF India. Meanwhile, the founder of Project Mumbai highlighted that citizen-led cleanups demonstrate the tangible impact of consistent, small-scale interventions on urban sustainability. The event also reinforced collaboration between governmental bodies, civil society, and the private sector, showing that multi-stakeholder engagement is essential for effective climate action. A senior environmental official explained that participatory initiatives not only enhance ecological outcomes but also strengthen community ownership of local natural resources.

As Mumbai prepares to host Climate Week, the cleanup reflects a broader vision of the city as a hub for climate resilience and sustainable urban development in the Global South. By integrating civic participation with policy initiatives, the city is positioning itself to tackle environmental challenges while promoting zero-carbon, equitable urban living. The Juhu Beach exercise demonstrates that community-driven interventions can significantly complement regulatory frameworks. Residents and volunteers alike left the shore cleaner, but the initiative’s lasting impact will be measured in behavioural change, sustainable practices, and heightened civic awareness.
