Monsoon Preparations Stalled Govt Hesitates on MG Road Drainage Restoration

In a setback to monsoon preparedness initiatives, the much-needed restoration of drainage systems along MG Road, a key thoroughfare in the city, remains ensnared in bureaucratic quagmire as administrative sanction from the state government is still pending.

Despite assurances from authorities regarding readiness for the impending monsoon season, prospects for the drainage overhaul appear dim this year. The Public Works Department (PWD) had forwarded a comprehensive proposal, totalling Rs 15 crore, to the government several months ago, outlining plans to reconstruct and upgrade drainage infrastructure along MG Road, particularly notorious for waterlogging during heavy rains. This proposal includes the refurbishment of existing drains and the installation of new sewer facilities in areas currently lacking proper drainage. The deteriorating condition of concrete slabs covering the drains, coupled with damaged footpaths, poses significant hazards to pedestrians traversing MG Road. Although attempts were made to address the issue by removing and cleaning the drains, the subsequent reinstallation of damaged slabs without repairs has exacerbated safety concerns.

Officials from the PWD responsible for MG Road maintenance emphasise their inability to commence restoration work until receiving clearance from the government. Recent discussions led by Mayor M. Anilkumar underscored the urgency of completing drainage cleaning citywide before the monsoon onset. Expressing dissatisfaction with the delayed progress on MG Road, the municipal corporation contemplates enlisting the assistance of Kochi Metro Rail Limited for the restoration efforts. The prolonged delay in administrative approval for the MG Road drainage project underscores systemic inefficiencies hindering vital infrastructure upgrades, jeopardising public safety and urban resilience in the face of recurrent monsoon challenges.
