The Pune-Amravati and Solapur-Mumbai air routes have been selected under the Centre’s Modified UDAN scheme, a move expected to strengthen regional connectivity across Maharashtra and improve access to the state’s commercial, industrial and educational centres.
Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol announced the selection on Thursday. The proposed routes are part of the revised framework of the Modified Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) scheme, under which states can propose up to four air routes and two airports through a challenge-based selection process.
Maharashtra has put forward the Mumbai-Solapur and Pune-Amravati routes under the process. The selection creates a pathway for services between the cities, but does not by itself confirm when flights will begin, how frequently they will operate or what fares passengers will pay.
The proposed Solapur-Mumbai connection would link Solapur’s textile and commercial base with Mumbai, Maharashtra’s financial hub. The route could provide an additional travel option for traders, entrepreneurs and professionals who currently depend on other forms of transport for journeys between the two cities.
The Pune-Amravati route would connect Vidarbha with western Maharashtra. Pune is a major centre for education, employment and business, while Amravati serves as an important urban centre in the eastern part of the state. A direct air service could reduce the need for passengers to travel through other cities, subject to the eventual schedule and operational viability of the route.
Under the Modified UDAN framework, route proposals are assessed through a challenge-based mechanism that considers passenger demand and the need to improve regional connectivity. The approach allows state governments to identify routes intended to extend air access beyond the country’s largest aviation centres.
For residents, the immediate significance of the selection is that both routes have moved beyond a general demand for better connectivity and entered a formal scheme-based process. However, passengers will see a practical benefit only after an airline or operator starts services and the routes receive workable schedules and affordable fares.
The announcement also highlights the limits of route selection as a measure of connectivity. An approved or selected link can still face challenges related to demand, aircraft availability, airport operations and commercial sustainability. None of those operational details were specified in the announcement supplied for this report.
The next stage will involve the implementation of the selected routes under the Modified UDAN framework. Until services are formally launched, the Pune-Amravati and Solapur-Mumbai links remain proposed connections rather than operating flight routes.
