The proposed Modi Mill flyover extension could link key elevated road sections across South Delhi and address recurring congestion on the Outer Ring Road, according to a report citing the traffic department and local representatives. The proposal is expected to be placed before Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta for consideration after a Public Works Department assessment.
The plan involves extending the Modi Mill flyover towards the Kalkaji, Nehru Place and Savitri Cinema flyovers. The objective is to create a more continuous elevated route through a corridor that frequently experiences traffic bottlenecks near Bhairav Mandir, Nehru Place and the Savitri Cinema flyover.
South Delhi MLA and South District Development Committee chairperson Shikha Rai said the proposal would be presented to the chief minister and PWD Minister Parvesh Verma as part of a long-term plan to reduce congestion in the area. A PWD team is expected to prepare a report, after which the chief minister and the PWD minister may conduct a site inspection before taking a decision on the proposal.
The proposal follows concerns within the traffic department that simply connecting the Kalkaji flyover to the Modi Mill flyover may not be sufficient to resolve congestion. A bottleneck exists near Bhairav Mandir, where traffic arriving from Maa Anandmayi Marg, Modi Mill and Nehru Place converges after making U-turns.
According to the report, vehicles parked near the temple reduce the usable width of a four-lane road to between one and one-and-a-half lanes. Three petrol stations in the area, along with queues of vehicles waiting for compressed natural gas, create another bottleneck extending for about 300 metres.
The current works include construction of a second lane on the single-lane Kalkaji flyover and its extension towards Modi Mill. The work began about a month ago and is estimated to cost ₹312.94 crore. The Modi Mill flyover is around four kilometres from Chirag Delhi, while the remaining stretch towards Nehru Place and Savitri Cinema includes an approximately 500-metre elevated section at the Nehru Place flyover.
The second lane of the 435-metre Savitri Cinema flyover is also expected to be taken up soon. The project is estimated to cost ₹58.81 crore. The proposed extension would seek to connect the Kalkaji flyover with the Nehru Place flyover and extend the Nehru Place elevated section towards Savitri Cinema.
Traffic congestion has also been reported near the CR Park area and the Savitri Cinema flyover. The traffic department’s view is that addressing the intervening bottlenecks will be necessary if the proposed connections are to produce a substantial reduction in delays along the corridor.
The next formal steps are the submission of the proposal before the chief minister, completion of the PWD team’s report and a possible joint site inspection by the chief minister and the PWD minister. A final decision on the additional elevated-road links has not yet been announced.
