A 23-year-old man suffered serious head injuries after a cement block reportedly fell from the elevated Metro Line 9 construction site in Kashimira on Sunday afternoon, raising fresh concerns about safety controls along the corridor.
The injured man, identified only as Shadab, was crossing the road at about 1pm when he stopped to answer a phone call. The cement block then fell on his head, according to a report by Times of India – Mumbai. He is undergoing treatment at Wockhardt Hospital in Mira Road, Kashimira police senior inspector Rajendra Kamble said.
The incident occurred on the Metro Line 9 route connecting Dahisar East with Mira Bhayander. According to the report, Shadab remained on the road for nearly an hour after the impact. Heavy vehicles parked at the location reportedly made it difficult for people to notice him. A passerby eventually spotted him and took him to hospital in an auto-rickshaw.
The latest injury follows another safety incident at the Metro Line 9 construction site about a month ago. Granite stones reportedly fell into a barricaded work area at Medetiya Nagar station, with some of the stones later puncturing the tyres of a passing school van.
Following that incident, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority imposed a fine of Rs 10 crore on contractor J Kumar Infraprojects Ltd and Rs 2.5 crore on two agencies, the report said. The earlier incident had also prompted scrutiny of how materials were being secured and how work zones were separated from moving traffic and nearby residents.
Residents in Kashimira have alleged that adequate safety measures are not being followed at the construction site. They claimed that construction material, iron rods and other metal objects had fallen from the site on earlier occasions as well. These allegations have not been independently established in the supplied report.
The incident highlights the risks created when elevated construction work takes place above active roads and pedestrian routes. Barricading, securing materials, maintaining clear access below work sites and ensuring that vehicles do not obstruct emergency response are central to protecting people using roads alongside large infrastructure projects.
