Meerut Metro Trial Run Begins, Set to Alleviate Traffic and Boost Connectivity

The eagerly awaited trial run of the Meerut Metro commenced on Sunday, marking a significant milestone in the city’s push to enhance its public transportation system. The trial services, which are currently running between Meerut South and Meerut Central, are expected to ease congestion on the busy Delhi-Meerut road, a major route that connects Meerut to Delhi and other northern states.

The 23km metro line, which includes both elevated and underground sections, is designed to serve the growing needs of the city’s population and improve connectivity to key commercial hubs in the region. With 13 stations planned along the route, the metro is set to reduce the reliance on road transport, which currently sees a heavy flow of vehicles daily, including trucks, buses, and private vehicles heading towards Delhi and beyond. Rajveer Rathore, a resident of Delhi Road, shared his optimism about the metro’s potential to ease transportation woes. “The area around the Delhi-Meerut road is home to numerous showrooms, factories, and MSME businesses. People currently rely on UPSRTC buses for their trips to Delhi, but the metro will make travel much more convenient,” Rathore said. The metro will be particularly beneficial for locals who regularly commute between Meerut and Delhi, offering them a faster and more comfortable alternative to road transport.

During the trial run, the metro’s speed ranged between 40 and 135 kmph, with officials evaluating its safety, ride comfort, and integration with the broader transportation network. NCRTC (National Capital Region Transport Corporation) officials have assured the public that the civil construction work is nearing completion, with plans to make the metro operational later this year. One of the most exciting features of the Meerut Metro is its integration with the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS). The metro stations are designed with a unique layout that accommodates both the metro trains and the Namo Bharat semi-high-speed trains, allowing for seamless travel between the two modes of transport. According to Puneet Vats, NCRTC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, passengers will be able to use common stations for both services, making it easier for commuters to switch between the metro and the RRTS network.

The Meerut Metro’s design is also noteworthy, with stations featuring dual platforms and four tracks, ensuring that the metro and Namo Bharat trains operate smoothly without interference. NCRTC has designated four stations as common for both metro and RRTS services, making it the first time in India that passengers will have access to both types of trains at the same station. This innovative infrastructure aims to improve intercity connectivity and make travel more convenient for the residents of Meerut and neighbouring areas. Once fully operational, the Meerut Metro will run on a 23km stretch from Meerut South to Modipuram Depot, passing through 13 strategically located stations. The metro’s connection to the Namo Bharat RRTS will further enhance the city’s transportation options, making it an important hub for travel in the NCR (National Capital Region). As the trial phase progresses, locals are hopeful that the metro will not only ease their daily commutes but also attract more visitors and investors, boosting Meerut’s growth as a key city in northern India. With the metro expected to open later this year, the residents of Meerut are on the brink of experiencing a transformation in their daily commutes, with improved mobility, less congestion, and better connectivity to major cities and industrial hubs across the region.
