Mathura Road Delhi Gets Rs 379 Crore Upgrade from Ashram to Badarpur

Mathura Road Delhi is set for a major rebuild between Ashram and the Badarpur Border, with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) beginning the tender process for an estimated Rs 379-crore road redevelopment project. The 7.97-kilometre work is planned as the first phase of a wider effort to make the corridor signal-free and improve traffic movement in southeast Delhi.

The proposed stretch connects southern Delhi with Faridabad and the Badarpur Border and carries a heavy volume of daily traffic. According to the report, motorists currently face slow movement and congestion at several points on the route. The existing road is also in poor condition in places and does not meet the required four-lane standards throughout its length.

The redevelopment plan will address sections where the carriageway is narrower than required. It will also improve the central verge and footpaths, both of which are described as inadequate on parts of the corridor. The project is intended to rebuild the road rather than limit the work to routine resurfacing, although the supplied report does not specify a construction start date or completion timeline.

NHAI’s tender process will also cover improvements to culverts and road junctions along Mathura Road. Interchanges are to be redesigned so that junctions remain more open and traffic movement is improved. The plan includes a new approach to drainage, with the objective of preventing water from accumulating on the road during the monsoon.

Drainage is a functional issue as well as a maintenance concern for the corridor. Standing water can damage road surfaces and add to delays during rainfall. By including drainage redesign alongside carriageway, junction, verge and footpath improvements, the proposed work addresses several of the infrastructure shortcomings identified in the existing stretch.

The project is being positioned as the first phase of a signal-free corridor plan. However, the report does not provide details of the individual intersections that will be treated, the traffic management arrangements during construction, land requirements or the number of lanes that will be available after completion. Those details are expected to become clearer through the tender and subsequent implementation process.

The report also links the development to traffic changes on the recently opened 3.5-kilometre Barapullah Phase-3 corridor. Real-time traffic information for the route has begun appearing on Google Maps, allowing drivers to view current conditions and choose alternative routes. Delhi Traffic Police has attributed earlier congestion on the corridor partly to the absence of live traffic data, which caused the route to appear congestion-free on the mapping service.

According to the report, traffic conditions on Barapullah Phase 3 have started improving after the data update. The police have said the problem is expected to reduce further over time. For Mathura Road, the immediate next step is NHAI’s tender process for the proposed Rs 379-crore rebuilding and upgrade works between Ashram and the Badarpur Border.
