Maruti Suzuki Targets 1 Million Green Vehicle Sales in FY27

Maruti Suzuki India is targeting sales of nearly 1 million green vehicles in the financial year 2026-27 after launching automatic CNG variants of the Swift, Dzire and Baleno, expanding its offering for urban buyers seeking lower running costs without giving up automatic transmission convenience.

The automaker raised its earlier green vehicle sales projection of 800,000 to 900,000 units, according to Senior Executive Officer, Marketing and Sales, Partho Banerjee. The company’s green vehicle category includes CNG, hybrid and electric models.

The new automatic S-CNG variants were launched under Maruti Suzuki’s Auto Green Mission. The introductory ex-showroom price is Rs 8.53 lakh for the Dzire automatic S-CNG, Rs 7.92 lakh for the Swift automatic S-CNG and Rs 8.32 lakh for the Baleno automatic S-CNG.

Banerjee said the new variants address a gap in the company’s CNG portfolio. CNG models had previously lost some buyers to petrol cars with automatic transmissions because they did not offer the same combination of fuel choice and driving convenience. The company said the new products are aimed at customers who want the operating-cost advantage of CNG while retaining automatic transmission.

Maruti Suzuki currently has about 70 per cent of India’s CNG passenger vehicle market, according to the company executive. It sells close to 80,000 CNG vehicles a month, while CNG accounts for about 43 per cent of the company’s own vehicle portfolio.

The company said its immediate challenge is production capacity rather than customer demand. Banerjee said CNG vehicle production capacity is currently around 18,000 units a month and that the company is allocating vehicles according to waiting periods. Higher supplies, he said, would allow the company to increase volumes further.

The new launches also come as crude oil prices hover around $100 per barrel, a factor Maruti Suzuki expects to support demand for vehicles using alternatives to petrol. Banerjee said the company was aiming for close to 1 million green vehicle sales in FY27, while stopping short of confirming whether CNG would account for half of its green vehicle portfolio during the year.

Maruti Suzuki claimed that the automatic CNG version of the Dzire delivers fuel efficiency of 36.47 kilometres per kilogram, making it India’s most fuel-efficient sedan. The company has not provided a separate FY27 sales target for CNG, hybrid and electric vehicles within the combined green vehicle figure.

The launches place automatic CNG vehicles more firmly in the mainstream urban passenger-car market, but the company’s stated target will depend on its ability to expand CNG production capacity and maintain supplies against existing waiting periods. The next operational milestone will be the planned ramp-up of CNG vehicle production during the current financial year.
