Mangaluru Water Metro Set for 2026 Launch

Mangaluru is poised to revolutionize its urban transport landscape with the introduction of a Water Metro system, drawing inspiration from the successful model implemented in Kochi.

The Karnataka Maritime Board (KMB) has initiated feasibility studies to assess the viability of this ambitious project, aiming for a launch by March 2026. The proposed Water Metro will span approximately 30 kilometers, connecting key locations along the Phalguni and Netravati rivers. This initiative is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, promote eco-friendly transportation, and enhance connectivity to various parts of the city.

A senior official from the KMB stated that the project aims to establish an efficient water transport system, integrating modern electric or diesel-powered catamaran boats equipped with essential amenities. The feasibility study will guide the placement of Water Metro stations, selecting locations based on demand, land availability, and connectivity, with a strong emphasis on sustainability. The Water Metro is envisioned to connect 17 stations, including Maravoor Bridge, Jokatte, Kavoor, Kuloor Bridge, Bangrakuloor, Nayarkudru, Sultan Battery, Tannirbhavi Church, Kasaba Bengre, Old Port, Port Ferry, Sand Bar Island, Thota Bengre, Hoige Bazaar, Jeppu, Old Ferry, Jeppu National Highway Bridge, Ullal Bridge, and Kotekar.

To ensure the project’s success, the feasibility study will encompass various aspects, including demand assessments, environmental evaluations, traffic and route optimization, and multimodal connectivity. Advanced technologies like LiDAR surveys and bathymetric assessments will inform station planning and dredging needs. Financial analyses will project costs and revenues, develop a tariff structure, and assess socio-economic impacts. The report is also expected to propose a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for effective project implementation, enhancing its appeal to investors.

While the project has garnered significant support, concerns have been raised regarding tidal fluctuations near the river mouth at Alive Bagilu, which could impact the Water Metro’s speed and efficiency. Experts emphasize the need for thorough feasibility studies to address these challenges. The Mangaluru Water Metro project represents a significant step towards sustainable urban development, offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional transportation methods. By leveraging the city’s natural waterways, the initiative aims to enhance mobility, reduce carbon emissions, and boost tourism, aligning with broader goals of creating equitable and sustainable cities.
