The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has ordered a technical review of the newly opened Makarba Railway Overbridge after traffic congestion and bottlenecks were reported soon after the facility became operational. The civic body is also widening the full road stretch connecting Corporate Crossroads and SG Highway in an effort to improve vehicle movement along the corridor.
AMC has assigned the detailed study to project design consultant DELF Consulting Engineers (India) Pvt Ltd. The consultant has been asked to examine the junction geometry, compare the traffic pattern anticipated during the original design stage with the current movement of vehicles, assess immediate corrective measures and recommend permanent solutions for the bottleneck.
The overbridge was constructed under the Phatak Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and witnessed heavy traffic snarls shortly after its inauguration. The congestion has prompted the civic administration to review whether the junction and connecting roads are adequately handling traffic flows generated by the new grade-separated link.
As an immediate intervention, AMC introduced a specialised capsule design at the junction. The civic body said the design was intended to streamline vehicular movement and reduce congestion. The measure is being implemented alongside the road-widening work on the approach connecting Corporate Crossroads and SG Highway.
Officials said the full-width road-widening work is expected to be completed shortly and is likely to improve traffic flow along the corridor. Deputy municipal commissioner Dinesh Gurav said the widening work would be completed soon, without providing a specific completion date in the report.
The review places the overbridge within a wider traffic-management question: opening a new crossing can remove a railway-level barrier while shifting pressure to its approaches, junctions and adjoining road network. AMC’s technical study is expected to establish the geometry and traffic changes responsible for the current bottleneck and identify both immediate and permanent interventions.
The civic body has not disclosed the study’s completion timeline, the traffic data being used for comparison or the cost of the road-widening work. The next formal step is the technical assessment by DELF Consulting Engineers, while AMC continues the widening work on the connecting stretch.
