Sewri-Worli Connector Delayed Again, Deadline Set for May 2027

Mumbai’s Sewri-Worli connector, the planned east-west link between the Coastal Road and Atal Setu, will not be completed by its previous September 2026 deadline. The Maharashtra government has now set May 31, 2027, as the new completion date for the 4.5-kilometre project.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed officials about the revised timeline during a meeting on infrastructure projects, according to a report by The Indian Express. A senior official of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) confirmed the extension.

The connector is intended to link Worli and Sewri while improving connections between the Coastal Road and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, also known as Atal Setu. A section of the elevated corridor crosses the railway tracks near Prabhadevi and Parel stations. The project will also replace the local Elphinstone bridge, which carried road traffic over the railway tracks.

The railway-overbridge portion is being constructed by MahaRail, the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation. Officials are preparing to launch prefabricated girders over the railway tracks in November. The girders are being assembled on site before being positioned over the tracks, with each reported to be 132 metres long.

The work has been complicated by the height of the bridge piers and the double-decker design of the corridor. According to the MMRDA official quoted in the report, launching the girders is particularly challenging near Parel and Sewri because construction teams must work around traffic moving on the road below.

The old 112-year-old bridge was dismantled by the MRIDC in April, a month later than originally scheduled. The bridge had been shut since September 2025, and its removal was part of the work required to construct the new connection over the railway tracks.

MahaRail plans to complete its portion of the project by the end of 2026. After that, MMRDA will be responsible for completing the connecting sections between the railway bridge and the other parts of the corridor. The remaining work is expected to continue until May 2027, according to the senior MMRDA official.

The revised deadline means that the closure and construction-related disruption around the railway crossing will continue beyond the earlier completion target. The next major project milestone is the planned launch of the girders over the railway tracks in November, followed by completion of the MahaRail section by the end of the year.
