Maharashtra Pushes Charging Infrastructure For Electric Buses
Maharashtra has outlined an ambitious transition strategy to convert its entire state-run bus fleet to electric mobility by 2047, signalling one of India’s most significant public transport decarbonisation efforts. The plan places public transport at the centre of the state’s climate and mobility agenda while highlighting the scale of infrastructure investment required to support a cleaner intercity and rural transport network. The roadmap, reviewed during a high-level assessment of the state transport corporation’s electric bus programme, establishes phased targets for fleet electrification over the next two decades. State officials aim to convert half of the public bus fleet to electric operations by 2029, increase the share to 80 per cent by 2035, and achieve complete transition by 2047.
The announcement comes as Maharashtra continues to face growing urbanisation pressures, rising fuel costs and increasing concerns around transport-related emissions. Public transport experts note that state-run bus services remain the backbone of mobility for millions of commuters across cities, towns and rural districts. As a result, fleet electrification could play a substantial role in improving air quality while reducing dependence on fossil fuels. A key challenge identified by policymakers is the creation of a robust charging ecosystem capable of supporting large-scale deployment. Transport planners believe charging infrastructure, grid readiness and depot modernisation will determine the pace at which the Electric Bus Fleet transition can be implemented. Officials have therefore been directed to accelerate charging station development and strengthen operational support systems for electric mobility. The state transport corporation currently operates one of the country’s largest public bus networks, serving both metropolitan regions and remote communities.
Industry analysts suggest that replacing conventional diesel buses with electric alternatives could lower long-term operating costs while improving passenger comfort through quieter and cleaner journeys. However, the shift will require substantial investment in maintenance facilities, workforce training and energy management systems. Authorities are also exploring the use of artificial intelligence-based route planning to identify corridors best suited for electric operations. Such data-driven planning could help optimise battery utilisation, reduce downtime and improve service reliability. Experts say technology-led fleet management will be essential for ensuring that the Electric Bus Fleet programme delivers both environmental and economic benefits. Financial support under the state’s electric vehicle policy is expected to aid the transition. Incentives for electric buses are already being extended to encourage adoption, while ongoing procurement programmes are bringing thousands of new electric vehicles into the public transport system under long-term operating contracts.
For Maharashtra, the initiative represents more than a fleet replacement exercise. It reflects a broader shift towards low-carbon mobility, improved public transport accessibility and resilient transport infrastructure.
