Maharashtra Earthquake Sends Tremors Across Three Districts

A mild earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale was felt across parts of Maharashtra’s Nanded, Hingoli and Parbhani districts on Saturday, with residents in several towns and villages reportedly rushing out of their homes after feeling tremors.

The epicentre was located north of Shirli village in Vasmat taluka of Hingoli district, according to the report. Tremors were felt in Nanded city and in areas including Ardhapur, Mudkhed, Loha, Naigaon, Hadgaon and Himayatnagar talukas.

The reported earthquake affected an area connected by regular family, work and business ties with neighbouring Telangana. The erstwhile Nizamabad district shares a border with Nanded district, and communities on both sides maintain frequent links. These cross-border connections led Telangana residents to make enquiries about the impact in their native places in Maharashtra.

A large number of people from Maharashtra also work in different sectors in the erstwhile Nizamabad district. The report said these residents sought information about conditions in Nanded, Hingoli and Parbhani after the tremors were felt.

The episode highlights how seismic events can generate an immediate information need beyond the location where shaking is strongest. Residents living in border districts, families separated across state lines and workers away from their home villages often depend on informal communication networks for early updates about safety and damage.

The available report did not provide details of casualties, structural damage, official evacuation measures or further aftershocks. It also did not include a statement from a seismic monitoring agency or district administration. Authorities’ assessment of buildings and public infrastructure in the affected areas will determine the extent of the earthquake’s impact. For now, the confirmed details in the report are the reported magnitude, the location of the epicentre and the districts and localities where tremors were felt.
