Lucknow Flyover on NH-24A to Boost Mobility

Lucknow is set to witness a major traffic transformation with the construction of the fourth and final flyover on the National Highway 24A (NH-24A), following the successful completion of three flyovers spanning approximately 6 kilometres in the city.

This new infrastructure project, approved by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) on March 31, aims to alleviate the persistent congestion around the Engineering College roundabout, a critical junction that often chokes traffic flow, especially during peak hours. The 890-metre flyover, designed to provide uninterrupted passage for vehicles, will begin at the Madiaon railway overbridge and span above the Engineering College roundabout, thereby ensuring smoother connectivity. The second approach of the flyover will start near the Sahara Estate Road in Jankipuram. With an estimated cost of Rs 109 crore, the project includes not only the flyover itself but also 680 metres of approach roads, a 210-metre via-duct, five 30-metre spans, and a 60-metre steel bow-string superstructure. The flyover’s four lanes and accompanying slipways are designed to ensure optimal traffic flow while allowing for easy access to the highway from surrounding areas.

Officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) have highlighted that this flyover is expected to significantly reduce travel time for commuters moving between Sitapur and Barabanki. Once completed, vehicles will be able to maintain a speed of up to 80 km/h between Engineering College and Polytechnic, bypassing congested areas such as Tedhi Pulia, Adarshnagar, Indiranagar, and Munshi Pulia. This will not only improve connectivity but also enhance the overall efficiency of the road network, benefiting thousands of daily commuters. The PWD also noted that the inclusion of slipways in the design would allow residents to enter or exit the highway with ease, adding to the flyover’s utility. Furthermore, this development is part of a broader effort to improve road infrastructure in the city, with plans for releasing the project’s tender in the coming weeks. This flyover is the latest in a series of ambitious projects aimed at improving the flow of traffic on NH-24A within the city limits. The existing flyovers include a 1.4-km stretch from Tedhi Pulia to Adarshnagar, a 2.61-km stretch from Adarshnagar to Sector 19 in Indiranagar, and a 1.86-km section connecting Polytechnic crossing to Munshipulia. Together, these flyovers have significantly reduced bottlenecks, but the final stretch at Engineering College roundabout has remained a persistent challenge.

The completion of this flyover will complete the planned road infrastructure improvements along this key stretch, ensuring more efficient traffic movement and reduced congestion. The project also represents a significant investment in the city’s future, enhancing its connectivity with surrounding regions and supporting its growing infrastructure needs.
In a city that has experienced rapid urbanisation, this project reflects the ongoing efforts of local authorities to address the challenges posed by increasing traffic volumes. However, as Lucknow continues to expand, the need for more sustainable and eco-friendly traffic solutions remains pressing. While flyovers like the one planned for Engineering College roundabout will undoubtedly ease congestion, long-term solutions should focus on improving public transportation options and reducing the city’s carbon footprint.
