National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has restricted the entry of two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws, tractors, and pedestrians onto the newly developed six-lane stretch of National Highway 66 (NH 66) in Kerala.
This decision aims to mitigate risks associated with high-speed vehicular movement on the main carriageway. Signboards indicating the prohibition have been installed at various entry points, including near the Chelari GVHSS area, directing smaller vehicles to utilize the adjacent service roads. The NHAI has announced plans to install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at key locations to monitor compliance, with penalties for violations.
While the main highway has been constructed adhering to prescribed standards, the service roads, now bearing increased traffic, are reportedly narrower and not adequately equipped to handle the surge. The NHAI attributes this limitation to land acquisition constraints, noting that only 45 meters of land were procured, restricting the expansion of service roads . The diversion of smaller vehicles to service roads has led to increased congestion, with reports of traffic snarls and delays. Local traffic regulatory committees have raised concerns, suggesting that even private buses might be redirected to these service roads, potentially exacerbating the situation.
Illegal roadside parking along service roads is another emerging issue, further narrowing the already constrained pathways. The NHAI has emphasized that the development of dedicated parking spaces falls under the purview of local self-government institutions, urging them to take necessary actions. In response to the growing concerns, the NHAI is exploring alternative measures, including the possibility of allowing slow-moving vehicles to use the extreme left lane of the main highway in areas lacking service roads . However, this proposal is still under consideration and has not been implemented
The situation underscores the challenges of balancing infrastructural development with safety and accessibility. As the NHAI continues to monitor and adjust its strategies, the cooperation of local authorities and adherence to regulations by commuters remain crucial to ensuring a safe and efficient transportation environment.
