Kolkata weather is expected to remain mostly dry until Tuesday before changing from Wednesday, with light to moderate rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds forecast across several districts of south Bengal ahead of Durga Puja, according to the meteorological department’s forecast reported by Bartaman Patrika.
The weather is currently in a brief dry phase, but the expected formation of a new low-pressure area over the south-east Bay of Bengal could bring a fresh spell of rain during the middle of the week. A cyclonic circulation has already formed over the Andaman Sea, and meteorologists cited in the report said the possible low-pressure system may move towards Andhra Pradesh.
Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore and Jhargram are likely to experience cloudy skies and light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms from Thursday to Saturday. Wind gusts of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour are also possible in these districts.
For Kolkata and other parts of south Bengal, dry conditions are expected to continue until Tuesday, while a change is likely from Wednesday. The forecast indicates that the city could see increased cloud cover towards the end of the week before dry weather returns from Sunday. The report did not indicate that the anticipated low-pressure system would directly affect West Bengal, but its development could create favourable conditions for rain in parts of the region.
The forecast has immediate implications for outdoor activity and movement during the run-up to Durga Puja, when large numbers of residents typically travel through Kolkata and visit public spaces. Thunderstorms and gusty winds may also affect temporary structures, roadside movement and event arrangements, although the supplied forecast does not identify any specific disruption or advisory for such facilities.
North Bengal is expected to remain largely dry for now, with conditions favourable for the retreat of the monsoon. However, light rain remains possible on Friday and Saturday in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar. Scattered light rain may also occur in some northern districts during Shashthi and Saptami.
Kolkata may see partly cloudy skies initially, followed by clearer conditions as the day progresses. Despite the mainly dry weather, high moisture levels are expected to keep humidity-related discomfort in place. The city recorded a minimum temperature of 25.6 degrees Celsius, while the previous day’s maximum temperature was 31.2 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity ranged from 62% to 97%.
The meteorological forecast indicates that conditions favourable for the withdrawal of the monsoon may develop between Sunday and Wednesday. The next significant change expected in the forecast period is the possible development of the low-pressure area by Tuesday, followed by increased cloud cover and rain chances across parts of south Bengal from Wednesday.
