On Tuesday, Kolkata experienced multiple episodes of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by persistent cloud cover, significantly lowering the maximum temperature to 29.4°C. This is three degrees below the seasonal average and slightly higher than the minimum temperature of 27.1°C recorded earlier in the day.The day began with light drizzles, gradually intensifying into heavier showers by afternoon, with Kolkata receiving a total of 27.7 mm of rainfall by 5:30 pm. Over the past 24 hours, starting from Monday evening, the city accumulated 32.2 mm of rainfall, providing a much-needed relief from the recent heat.
Meteorologists from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) forecasted continued rain across Kolkata and adjoining districts of south Bengal for the next two days. Meanwhile, north Bengal anticipates heavier rainfall due to a cyclonic circulation over east Bihar and a trough extending from north Punjab to Mizoram across sub-Himalayan Bengal. While most parts of south Bengal are likely to experience light to moderate rain, localized areas such as North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, East Midnapore, Nadia, and Birbhum could receive substantial rainfall ranging from 70 mm to 110 mm on Wednesday.
RMC weather scientists noted that monsoon currents are active, contributing to sustained and consistent rainfall in south Bengal and Kolkata, albeit not expected to be excessively heavy. The prevailing cloud cover has effectively limited sunlight penetration, maintaining temperatures closer to the minimum threshold, a trend likely to persist in the coming days.Looking ahead, the minimum temperature in Kolkata is projected to drop further to 26°C by Wednesday, indicative of continued cool and damp conditions owing to the ongoing weather patterns.As Kolkata adapts to these weather fluctuations, residents are advised to stay updated on local forecasts and be prepared for potential disruptions, especially in areas prone to heavy rainfall. The civic authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring necessary precautions are in place to mitigate any adverse impacts of the ongoing monsoon activity.
