A new direct rail freight service linking Kolkata Port with Biratnagar in Nepal has begun commercial operations, marking a significant shift in cross-border cargo movement by eliminating the need for cargo transfers at the India–Nepal border. The development is expected to reduce logistics costs, improve supply chain reliability and strengthen regional trade while encouraging greater use of rail transport over road-based freight.
The inaugural movement involved a 40-wagon freight train transporting containerised cargo from eastern India’s principal maritime gateway to the Biratnagar Customs Yard under the revised India–Nepal rail transit framework. By allowing goods to travel directly to their destination without intermediate handling, the system simplifies customs-linked logistics and reduces operational delays that have traditionally affected cross-border freight movement.For businesses operating across eastern India and Nepal, the direct rail freight service represents more than a transport upgrade. Lower handling requirements can reduce the risk of cargo damage while shortening delivery schedules for manufacturers, exporters and importers dependent on predictable supply chains. Urban logistics specialists note that such improvements can increase the competitiveness of inland industrial centres by strengthening their connection with seaports and international trade routes.The new operation builds upon rail infrastructure developed in recent years between Jogbani in Bihar and Biratnagar in Nepal.
Changes introduced through the revised bilateral transit arrangements now permit uninterrupted commercial rail movement, replacing earlier processes that required cargo to be shifted between transport systems near the border. This operational change is expected to streamline freight management while reducing congestion associated with multiple loading and unloading stages.From an urban development perspective, expanding rail-based freight networks supports broader efforts to create more resilient and efficient logistics systems. Compared with long-distance road transport, rail can improve fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions per tonne of cargo, making it an increasingly important component of sustainable freight strategies. Transport planners argue that stronger multimodal connectivity between ports, industrial zones and neighbouring economies can also ease pressure on highways while supporting balanced regional economic growth.
Industry observers believe the success of this corridor could encourage wider adoption of cross-border rail services for additional commodities and container traffic. Future expansion, however, will depend on sustained infrastructure investment, coordinated customs procedures and reliable rail capacity on both sides of the border. If these elements continue to improve, the corridor could become an important model for integrating trade efficiency with lower-carbon transport across South Asia, benefiting businesses while advancing more sustainable regional logistics networks.
