The city’s metro network is poised for a significant fleet upgrade in the 2026-27 financial year, with around 14 new-generation trainsets expected to join operations as authorities prepare for rising commuter demand and the steady expansion of urban rail corridors. The planned induction is expected to strengthen service reliability, increase passenger capacity and support Kolkata’s transition towards cleaner, high-capacity public transport.
The additional rolling stock comes at a time when Kolkata Metro is witnessing rapid network expansion through new corridors and extensions that are reshaping mobility across the metropolitan region. As more stations become operational, transport planners say expanding the fleet is essential to ensure that infrastructure investments translate into better frequency, reduced crowding and dependable services for daily commuters.According to railway officials, the new generation rakes are expected to be manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai and will incorporate updated propulsion technology, automatic sliding doors and higher operational efficiency. Designed for faster acceleration and improved energy performance, the trains are intended to deliver smoother operations while lowering maintenance requirements over their lifecycle.
Urban mobility experts note that increasing the availability of modern rolling stock is as important as constructing new lines. Additional trains enable operators to shorten waiting times, improve schedule adherence and respond more effectively to peak-hour demand without placing excessive pressure on existing assets. Such improvements also encourage greater use of public transport, reducing dependence on private vehicles and contributing to lower urban emissions.The new generation rakes are part of a wider modernisation programme announced for Kolkata Metro, under which 60 advanced trainsets are planned over the next four to five years.
