Kolkata Metro surpassed Rs 1 crore in daily fare earnings, marking a significant milestone for the city’s public transport system. On Saturday, the metro network recorded an impressive Rs 1.01 crore in fare revenue, driven by approximately 675,000 passengers utilising the three operational lines.
This surge in passenger numbers and fare collection reflects the growing acceptance and reliance on Kolkata’s metro services. The Blue Line, which runs from Dakshineswar to New Garia, was the busiest, accommodating around 575,000 passengers. Meanwhile, the Green Line-1, connecting Sector Five to Sealdah, and Green Line-2, linking Esplanade to Howrah Maidan, collectively carried about 50,000 passengers. The introduction of Sunday services on Green Line-2, starting September 1, further enhances the metro’s accessibility, providing commuters with additional travel options and potentially boosting daily ridership.
Additionally, Kolkata Metro has expanded its services to include the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade stretch of the East-West Metro’s Green Line-2 on Sundays. This section, notably running beneath the River Ganga, will see 62 trains operating at 15-minute intervals between 2.15 pm and 9.45 pm. The experimental Sunday service aims to improve connectivity and accommodate the increasing passenger demand, reflecting Kolkata Metro’s commitment to enhancing urban mobility. This strategic expansion is expected to further cement the metro’s role as a critical component of the city’s public transport infrastructure.
