Kolkata Metro Growth Could Reshape Daily Commuting
Kolkata is preparing for a substantially larger rapid-transit network, with Metro Railway targeting around 130 km of operational routes in the coming years. The proposed expansion comes as the system handles millions of passenger journeys annually and as new corridors begin changing connections across the metropolitan region. For Kolkata, the scale-up could influence commuting patterns, road congestion, land use and the future shape of urban growth.
The proposed Kolkata Metro expansion comes against a sharp increase in the system’s reach. Metro Railway reported 23.60 crore passenger journeys during financial year 2025-26, underlining the network’s growing importance to everyday mobility. The system also recorded earnings of ₹166 crore between April and July 2026, up 34% from the corresponding period a year earlier.Several projects are already extending the city’s rapid-transit footprint. Recent work has included progress on the Purple Line between Joka and Esplanade, where an underground tunnelling breakthrough between Khidderpore and Victoria was achieved in July. The Orange Line has also seen progress, including work around the Chingrighata section.For residents, however, the value of a longer network will depend on more than kilometres of track. Transport planners point to station accessibility, reliable interchange between lines and effective first- and last-mile connections as critical determinants of whether new infrastructure translates into higher public-transport use. The experience of the Green Line illustrates the point: after the East-West corridor became fully operational in August 2025, reported daily ridership rose from about 78,000 to 2.04 lakh.
The expansion also has implications for Kolkata’s environmental and economic trajectory. A well-integrated metro system can give commuters an alternative to private vehicles, potentially easing pressure on busy roads while supporting denser, transit-linked development. But the benefits will depend on how stations connect with buses, walking routes, cycling infrastructure and neighbourhoods rather than functioning as isolated transport nodes.Capacity will be another test. The Railways has announced plans to induct 60 new-generation metro rakes over the next four to five years, while around 14 rakes are expected during 2026-27. Additional trains will be important as the network grows, particularly if higher passenger volumes are to be accommodated without compromising frequency or comfort.Digital ticketing is expanding alongside physical infrastructure, with passengers increasingly using QR-based tickets, electronic payments and app-based smart-card recharges.
Yet the central measure of the Kolkata Metro expansion will remain its usefulness to citizens: shorter and more predictable journeys, easier access to employment and services, and stronger connections between the city and its wider metropolitan economy.The next phase therefore needs to be judged not simply by how quickly kilometres are added, but by whether Kolkata builds a connected, accessible and resilient public-transport system around them.
