Kolkata’s urban transport network is poised for a significant expansion after the Union Railway Ministry announced plans to introduce 60 next-generation metro trains while reviewing a wider pipeline of rail infrastructure projects across West Bengal. The move comes at a time when the city is grappling with rising commuter density, ageing transit assets and mounting pressure to create low-emission mobility systems capable of supporting long-term economic growth.
During a high-level review meeting in Kolkata, railway officials assessed ongoing transport projects and identified bottlenecks affecting execution timelines. Authorities indicated that project progress would undergo another review within six months, signalling closer monitoring of critical infrastructure works tied to the region’s mobility network.The proposed induction of 60 new metro trains over the next four to five years is expected to transform the operational capacity of the Kolkata Metro system, one of India’s oldest urban rail networks. Transport planners say the upgrade is essential as the metropolitan region continues to expand outward, increasing dependence on mass transit for daily travel between residential suburbs, industrial clusters and commercial districts.The Kolkata Metro expansion also reflects a broader shift in how Indian cities are approaching public transport investment.
