Kolkata Metro Enhances Purple Line Services from May 5

Kolkata, the Metro Railway authorities have announced an increase in the number of daily services on the Joka-Majerhat segment of the Purple Line, effective from Monday, May 5.

This expansion aims to improve connectivity and reduce waiting times for commuters in the southern parts of the city. Currently, the Joka-Majerhat stretch operates with 18 daily services, with a gap of approximately 50 minutes between trains. The upcoming schedule will see the number of daily services more than doubling to 40, with trains running at intervals of just 22 minutes. This enhancement is expected to alleviate congestion and provide more convenient travel options for residents in the southwest regions of Kolkata.

The decision to increase services follows a comprehensive study of commuter patterns and feedback from passengers. Metro officials have noted a growing demand for improved connectivity in the area, particularly during peak hours. By reducing the waiting time between trains, the Kolkata Metro aims to accommodate the increasing number of passengers and ensure a smoother commuting experience. The Joka-Majerhat segment, currently operating independently, is part of the larger Purple Line extension project. Work is underway to extend the line further from Majerhat to Esplanade, which will integrate the Purple Line with the existing Blue and Green lines, enhancing the overall metro network and providing seamless connectivity across the city.

As of now, train operations on the Purple Line are limited to weekdays, with no services on Saturdays and Sundays. Metro authorities have not announced any changes to this weekend closure policy at this time. This initiative is part of Kolkata Metro’s ongoing efforts to modernize and expand its services, aiming to provide efficient, eco-friendly, and equitable public transportation options for the city’s residents. By enhancing the Purple Line’s frequency and connectivity, the Metro Railway is taking a significant step towards creating a more sustainable and accessible urban transport system.
