Kolkata Metro Driverless Safety Checks Advance 

Kolkata’s East-West Metro has moved a step closer to introducing driverless metro operations after the statutory railway safety authority completed a final inspection of the 16.6-kilometre Howrah Maidan–Sector V corridor. The assessment marks a significant stage before automatic train operation can be introduced on one of India’s most technically challenging urban rail routes, including its iconic under-river tunnel beneath the Hooghly.

The inspection focused on whether the corridor’s signalling, operational control systems and emergency response mechanisms are capable of supporting Automatic Train Operation (ATO), a technology that enables trains to accelerate, brake and stop with minimal human intervention. While operators remain responsible for initiating journeys and supervising passenger safety during the initial phase, the system represents a major advancement towards higher levels of automation.For Kolkata, the transition extends beyond a technological upgrade. The East-West Metro links residential neighbourhoods, commercial districts and key transport hubs across both banks of the river, making it one of the city’s most strategically important public transport corridors. Transport planners note that improved automation can enhance timetable reliability, reduce operational variability and optimise energy consumption, supporting more efficient movement across the metropolitan region.The driverless metro operations initiative also follows months of technical trials carried out after commercial service hours, during which engineers evaluated braking performance, station precision, signalling reliability and system responses under simulated emergency conditions.

These tests formed part of the mandatory approval process before the Commissioner of Railway Safety could determine operational readiness.Industry observers say automated metro systems are increasingly becoming central to urban mobility strategies worldwide because they improve service consistency while allowing operators to manage growing passenger demand more efficiently. For rapidly expanding cities such as Kolkata, automation can help maximise the capacity of existing infrastructure without requiring immediate large-scale physical expansion.The East-West Metro has already established itself as a landmark infrastructure project through India’s first operational under-river metro tunnel and its role in connecting Howrah with Salt Lake’s technology and business districts. With the corridor now functioning as a continuous route, introducing ATO is expected to further strengthen network efficiency while supporting seamless multimodal travel across the city.

A final authorisation from the safety regulator remains necessary before automated services can begin. Once operational clearance is issued, Metro authorities are expected to introduce ATO in phases while maintaining onboard operational oversight during the transition. Urban mobility experts believe the move could establish a benchmark for future metro modernisation projects across India, where safer, energy-efficient and reliable public transport is increasingly viewed as essential for reducing congestion, improving accessibility and advancing climate-resilient city development.
