Kolkata Metro’s Blue Line will operate partially on November 1 because of a power block and maintenance work at Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Netaji stations, disrupting services between Maidan and Shahid Khudiram from 9am to 6pm.
The Kolkata Metro authorities issued a notification on Friday outlining the Sunday operating plan. During the maintenance window, trains on the Blue Line will run between Dakshineswar and Maidan in both directions. The full route will not be available until the work is completed after 6pm.
According to the notice, the first train from Dakshineswar will leave at 9am, while the first service from Maidan will depart at 9.15am. Passengers travelling towards the southern section of the Blue Line will therefore have to change their plans or use alternative modes of transport during the block.
The affected section covers the stretch from Maidan to Shahid Khudiram, a long underground segment connecting central Kolkata with major residential and commercial areas in the south. The Blue Line is Kolkata Metro’s busiest corridor, carrying substantial numbers of daily commuters. Although Sunday demand is generally lower than on working days, the interruption is expected to place additional pressure on road-based transport and other available routes.
The maintenance activity has been scheduled at the two stations as part of the power block announced by Kolkata Metro. The authority has selected Sunday for the work, stating that passenger demand is comparatively lower on that day. The notification does not indicate that the entire Blue Line will remain closed; services will continue on the northern portion between Dakshineswar and Maidan during the specified hours.
Passengers using other Kolkata Metro corridors will not face a similar change under the Sunday schedule described in the notice. The Yellow Line between Jai Hind Airport and Noapara and the Green Line between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade are expected to operate normally. The Orange and Purple lines, which generally remain closed on Sundays, will follow their regular schedule.
The disruption highlights the operational trade-off involved in carrying out maintenance on a heavily used urban rail corridor. A Sunday block can reduce exposure to weekday commuter demand, but passengers travelling across the affected section will still need to account for a long gap in continuous metro connectivity.
Kolkata Metro has stated that full Blue Line services are expected to resume after the maintenance work is completed, with normal operations returning after 6pm on November 1.
