Kolkata’s Sealdah flyover is again under scrutiny after traffic authorities sought urgent intervention over severe deterioration of its carriageway. The warning comes as potholes, uneven surfaces and exposed concrete are affecting movement on a key central Kolkata link. The episode raises a wider question for the city: whether repeated surface repairs are enough for ageing infrastructure exposed to heavy traffic and increasingly intense monsoon conditions.
The Kolkata Traffic Police has formally approached the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), seeking emergency repairs to the flyover. Officials have reported extensive undulations and deep potholes across much of the elevated road, with particularly difficult conditions on stretches towards College Street. Traffic authorities say the deteriorated surface is slowing vehicles during busy periods and creating additional risks for motorists.For commuters, the problem is more than an inconvenience. Uneven carriageways can increase braking distances, destabilise two-wheelers and encourage sudden lane changes. Water accumulating in potholes can also make road defects harder to identify, particularly during heavy rain. In a dense transport environment such as Sealdah, even modest reductions in road capacity can have wider effects on surrounding streets.The immediate concern also exposes a longer-running maintenance challenge. KMDA had previously undertaken surface restoration, including bituminous roadwork, after heavy rain damaged the carriageway in 2025.
Earlier plans had also envisaged broader rehabilitation of the flyover, including structural strengthening and deck repairs.The Sealdah structure, also known as Vidyapati Setu, is not an isolated piece of infrastructure. It connects important central corridors and carries traffic around one of Kolkata’s busiest transport areas. Earlier assessments and repair plans have highlighted deterioration requiring attention beyond routine pothole filling. KMDA’s own tender records also show a planned carriageway renovation project for Vidyapati Setu at Sealdah, indicating that maintenance requirements extend beyond temporary surface treatment.This makes the current repair request significant for Kolkata’s broader infrastructure strategy. A cycle of patching, deterioration and repatching can impose repeated costs while leaving commuters exposed to disruption. For an ageing urban transport asset, preventive inspections, durable materials, drainage management and properly sequenced structural repairs can reduce both long-term expenditure and safety risks.
The next step will be to establish the extent of damage and match emergency road repairs with the flyover’s wider rehabilitation needs. For citizens, the priority is straightforward: a safe, predictable connection that remains functional through Kolkata’s heavy-rain periods without repeated disruption.
