A key road infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity between Kolkata and Jharkhand is progressing with the development of a new four-lane corridor and bridge network expected to ease traffic bottlenecks on one of eastern India’s busiest inter-state routes. The upgrade is expected to improve freight movement, reduce travel delays and strengthen economic links between Kolkata and the industrial centres of Jharkhand, while offering more reliable mobility for daily commuters.
The Kolkata Ranchi corridor has long experienced mounting traffic pressure as commercial vehicles, passenger transport and regional traffic compete for limited road capacity. Existing bridges and highway links frequently witness congestion during peak hours, slowing logistics operations and increasing fuel consumption. Urban mobility experts note that improving this corridor is essential not only for travel efficiency but also for supporting sustainable regional growth by reducing unnecessary idling emissions and improving transport reliability.According to officials associated with the project, construction activities are advancing across both the bridge structure and connecting road sections, with engineering work focused on creating an uninterrupted four-lane connection to the national highway network. Once operational, the upgraded route is expected to distribute vehicle movement more evenly, reducing dependence on existing crossings that currently act as major choke points for traffic heading towards Kolkata and neighbouring industrial districts.
The infrastructure improvement carries wider economic significance for Kolkata’s supply chain. The metropolitan region serves as a gateway for trade moving between eastern ports, manufacturing centres and mineral-rich districts of Jharkhand.
