Railway safety technology company Kernex Microsystems (India) Ltd has secured a ₹66.62 crore contract from Chennai’s Integral Coach Factory (ICF) for the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the Kavach automatic train protection system. The order reflects the continued expansion of India’s indigenous railway safety infrastructure as Indian Railways accelerates deployment of collision-avoidance technology across its network.
Kernex Microsystems (India) Ltd has received a ₹66.62 crore contract from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, for work related to India’s indigenous Kavach automatic train protection (ATP) system.
According to the company’s regulatory disclosure, the contract covers the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of Kavach equipment for railway applications. The project forms part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to expand deployment of the domestically developed train protection technology aimed at improving operational safety across the national rail network.
Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed to prevent train collisions by automatically applying brakes when a locomotive pilot fails to respond to signals or exceeds permitted speed limits. The system also assists in maintaining safe train separation and enables continuous communication between locomotives, signalling infrastructure and control systems.
The latest order reinforces the growing role of specialised signalling and railway technology companies in India’s railway modernisation programme. As Indian Railways scales up Kavach deployment, contracts are increasingly extending beyond trackside infrastructure to include onboard equipment, system integration, testing and commissioning across manufacturing and operational facilities.
For Kernex Microsystems, the order adds to its railway signalling portfolio at a time when India’s investment in rail safety, digital signalling and network modernisation continues to expand under multiple national infrastructure programmes.
