Kochi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for Kerala, extending through to Sunday. On Friday, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are expected to occur sporadically. A shear zone, situated roughly above mean sea level, and a cyclonic circulation over coastal Karnataka and its vicinity, which has merged with this shear zone, are predicted to significantly influence rainfall activity in the region.
Squally weather conditions, with wind speeds ranging from 35-45 kmph and gusts up to 55 kmph, are anticipated along the Kerala coast. Consequently, fishermen have been advised to refrain from venturing into these sea areas during this period.
On Friday, all districts except Pathanamthitta and Kottayam are on a yellow alert. Pookode in Wayanad recorded a substantial 12 cm of rainfall, while the Padinjarathara dam and Kannur received 6.7 cm and 5.9 cm of rainfall respectively by Thursday evening. On Saturday, yellow alerts have been issued for Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod. Additionally, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod remain on alert for isolated heavy rainfall on Sunday.
According to the 24-hour rainfall data recorded on Thursday morning, Cherthala received 9 cm of rain. As the state prepares for the imminent heavy rainfall, authorities are urging residents to stay cautious and adhere to safety advisories. This development underscores the need for heightened vigilance and preparedness, as the weather conditions are expected to be severe, impacting daily life and potentially causing disruptions. The IMD’s warnings aim to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of the public amidst the forecasted adverse weather conditions.
