A 20-year-old motorcyclist died and his pillion rider suffered critical injuries after their motorcycle hit the parapet of the Kathipara flyover in Guindy, Chennai, on Monday evening, according to police. The impact flung the rider from the flyover to the ground below, a fall of around 30ft.
The deceased was identified as Kumar, who was employed at a private firm. Perarasu, also 20 and a student, was travelling as the pillion rider and is undergoing treatment at the Kalaignar Centenary Super Speciality Hospital in Guindy.
Police said the two men were travelling from Tambaram towards Vadapalani when the crash occurred. Kumar was riding the motorcycle without wearing a helmet, police said. The motorcycle was travelling at speed when he lost control and struck the parapet on the left side of the flyover.
The collision threw Kumar over the parapet. He fell onto the ground below and died at the spot, according to the police account. Perarasu was thrown onto the flyover and sustained critical injuries in the crash.
Personnel from the St Thomas Mount Traffic Investigation Wing reached the location after receiving information about the incident. They shifted Perarasu to the super-speciality hospital for treatment and retrieved Kumar’s body from the area below the flyover.
The body was sent to Tambaram District Government Hospital for postmortem examination. A case has been registered, and the St Thomas Mount Traffic Investigation Wing is conducting further investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
The incident occurred on the Kathipara flyover, a major road link in southern Chennai that carries traffic between the Tambaram side and routes towards Vadapalani and other parts of the city. The police investigation will establish the sequence of events leading to the motorcycle hitting the parapet and determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal fall.
Perarasu remains under treatment, while the postmortem and investigation proceedings are continuing, police said.
