The Kasarvadavali flyover on Thane’s Ghodbunder Road has been closed completely to all vehicles from Wednesday after a complaint about a defect at a connecting section, with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) carrying out a technical inspection of the structure. The closure is expected to put additional pressure on alternative routes in the Kasarvadavali and Ghodbunder areas, where traffic is already affected by ongoing metro construction.
The flyover was built as part of the metro project to ease congestion at Kasarvadavali Junction and was opened to traffic in July 2025. The junction carries substantial light and heavy vehicle traffic travelling from Thane towards Borivali, Vasai and Virar, making it an important link on Ghodbunder Road.
According to the report, a citizen from Ghodbunder complained on Saturday night that a piece had come off one of the flyover’s pillars. The complaint was brought to the attention of Girish Patil of Justice for Ghodbunder, who informed the MMRDA contractor. The contractor carried out preliminary repairs later that night.
MMRDA officials began inspecting the flyover on Sunday afternoon. During the inspection, the authority instructed Thane traffic police to stop traffic across the structure. The resulting congestion led the traffic police to request a temporary relaxation, after which light vehicles were allowed to use the flyover for a limited period. The structure will now be fully closed from early Wednesday while the technical examination continues.
MMRDA is expected to require about a week to complete the technical inspection and prepare its report, according to the report. However, the authorities have not provided a confirmed date for completion of the inspection or reopening of the flyover. The indefinite closure has coincided with the Ganesh festival period, when traffic volumes and movement through the corridor are expected to increase.
Thane traffic police will divert vehicles through alternative routes until the inspection is completed. The authorities have not yet disclosed the full details of the diversion arrangements in the supplied report, but traffic pressure is expected to rise on roads serving Kasarvadavali and Ghodbunder.
