The closure began at around 2 pm as MMRDA officials examined the flyover. Traffic police said the shutdown was carried out on the authority’s instructions and as a precautionary measure to protect commuters during the inspection. Vehicles using the flyover were diverted to the road below, adding pressure to an already heavily used section of Ghodbunder Road.
Long queues formed between Kasarvadavali and Brahmand after traffic was redirected. Commuters travelling for work and other purposes faced delays, while congestion also affected the Kasarvadavali and Anand Nagar areas. The disruption came on a corridor that regularly experiences traffic pressure because of the growth of residential development in the surrounding neighbourhoods.
Large housing complexes have been built in Kasarvadavali and Anand Nagar over the past several years, increasing the number of daily trips on Ghodbunder Road. The movement of heavy vehicles has added to the congestion, according to the report. The flyover was built through MMRDA about a year ago to help reduce traffic pressure in the area.
The inspection followed a complaint received by MMRDA alleging that some portion near the flyover’s protective barrier had defects. The authority’s team began examining the structure on Sunday, with the traffic closure intended to prevent any risk while the checks were under way.
MMRDA officials said it would become clear after the inspection whether the flyover actually had any defect. The authority described the closure as a precaution taken for passenger safety.
