The India Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across several parts of Karnataka from September 20 to 24, after a low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal. A yellow alert has been issued for various districts, including coastal Karnataka, Malnad, northern districts and parts of the Bengaluru region.
The forecast covers Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada on the coast, as well as districts across north interior and south interior Karnataka. The weather system is expected to bring rain to many areas through the week, with moderate showers also possible in several locations over the weekend. The department said temperatures are likely to fall as rainfall increases.
In coastal Karnataka, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi may receive heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and winds of 40-50 kmph on September 20. Uttara Kannada is expected to receive moderate rain in many places, with similar wind conditions. From September 21 to 24, isolated locations in all three coastal districts may receive heavy rain and winds of 40-50 kmph.
The forecast also covers districts in north interior Karnataka, where several areas have been experiencing high temperatures. On September 20, isolated locations in Koppal and Raichur may receive heavy rain and winds of 30-40 kmph. Bagalkot, Belagavi, Bidar, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura and Yadgir may receive thunderstorms, moderate rain and strong winds in many places.
On September 21, isolated areas of Gadag, Haveri and Koppal may receive heavy rain and winds of 30-40 kmph. Moderate thunderstorms and strong winds are expected across several locations in Bagalkot, Belagavi, Bidar, Dharwad, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Vijayapura and Yadgir. The following day, isolated parts of Bagalkot, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Raichur and Vijayapura may receive heavy rain, while other northern districts are expected to receive light to moderate showers.
The forecast for September 23 indicates the possibility of heavy rain in isolated locations in Belagavi, Bidar, Gadag, Haveri, Kalaburagi and Raichur. On September 24, Gadag and Haveri may receive heavy rain in isolated areas. Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and winds is expected across several other north interior districts through the day.
South interior Karnataka, including the Malnad, Old Mysuru, central Karnataka and Bengaluru regions, is also expected to receive rain. Bengaluru Rural may receive heavy rain with thunderstorms on September 20, while Chikkamagaluru, Chikkaballapur, Kodagu, Kolar and Shivamogga may receive thunderstorms. On September 21, Bengaluru Rural is forecast to receive heavy rain, with increased wind speeds, while Chikkaballapur, Kolar, Ballari and Chamarajanagar may receive rain in many places.
On September 22, thunderstorms are expected in Bengaluru Rural, Chikkaballapur, Hassan, Kolar, Mysuru and Bengaluru South. Moderate rain may occur in Ballari, Chamarajanagar, Chikkamagaluru, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Kodagu, Mandya, Shivamogga, Tumakuru and Vijayanagara. Bengaluru Rural may again receive heavy rain on September 23, while Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Mysuru, Shivamogga and Tumakuru may experience rain with strong winds.
For September 24, isolated parts of Ballari, Chitradurga and Shivamogga may receive heavy rain with thunderstorms. Moderate rain is forecast in Vijayanagara, Bengaluru Rural, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Chikkamagaluru, Davanagere, Hassan, Kodagu, Kolar, Mandya, Mysuru, Bengaluru South and Tumakuru. The IMD forecast covers conditions through Thursday, September 24.
