Two masked men allegedly opened fire at a medical store in Najafgarh’s Naya Bazar on Saturday night, prompting a police investigation into a possible extortion attempt and suspected links to a network associated with gangster Kapil Sangwan, according to officials. No one was injured in the incident.
The shooting took place at about 8.30 pm, when the two men arrived outside the shop on a motorcycle. Shop owner Sanjay Rohilla, 51, told officials that both men had covered their faces and appeared to be between 25 and 30 years old. One of them got off the motorcycle and allegedly fired towards the upper portion of the store before the two fled.
Delhi Police teams reached the location after receiving information about the incident and began collecting evidence. Investigators are examining CCTV footage from the medical store and nearby roads to trace the movements of the suspects and identify their escape route. Police are also checking details linked to the motorcycle, including its registration number.
Officials said the motive for the shooting had not been established. Investigators are examining whether the store was targeted as part of an extortion attempt and whether the incident was carried out on the instructions of a network allegedly linked to Sangwan, also known as Nandu, who is reported to be based abroad. Police have not confirmed an extortion demand or the involvement of any particular gang.
The investigation is also examining whether Rohilla or members of his family had received threats before the shooting. The incident has caused concern in Naya Bazar, where the presence of armed attackers near a functioning commercial establishment has affected the sense of security among local traders and residents.
A first information report has been registered under relevant sections, and multiple police teams are working to identify and arrest the suspects. The next stages of the investigation will depend on the CCTV examination, forensic evidence collected from the site, verification of the motorcycle details and any evidence of prior threats or communication with the shop owner.
The report also referred to a separate incident in Delhi’s Kalkaji, where a 42-year-old property dealer, Manjeet Singh alias Bunty, died after an alleged clash between residents of a building over a construction-related dispute. Delhi Police said three people, including two women, had been detained in that case. The Kalkaji incident was separate from the Najafgarh shooting.
