Karnataka Bus Fare Hike Decision Due on November 4

Karnataka is set to decide on a government bus fare increase on November 4, with the state citing repeated diesel price rises and financial pressure on its four transport corporations. A meeting of senior officials from the corporations will be held on November 3 to discuss the proposed revision, Transport Minister Bairathi Suresh said.

The minister said the state government would announce its decision the following day after reviewing the fare proposal. The increase has not yet been finalised, and no revised fare slabs or effective date were disclosed in the report.

The proposed bus fare revision follows the state Cabinet’s approval of an ₹8-per-litre increase in the price of Nandini milk from November 1. The Cabinet approved a proposal from milk unions to raise the price, according to the report.

Suresh said diesel prices had increased five times during the past year, placing the four state transport corporations under financial strain. He described a fare increase as necessary to reduce the financial burden on the corporations to some extent.

The four corporations’ senior officials will participate in the November 3 meeting, where the fare increase will be discussed. The meeting is expected to precede the government’s formal decision on November 4.

Suresh said the Cabinet had held an extensive discussion on the proposed increase in bus fares. After hearing the views of ministers, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah assigned the decision on the fare revision to the Transport Department, according to the minister’s statement.

The proposed move places the operating finances of Karnataka’s state-run bus system at the centre of the government’s immediate decision. The minister’s explanation links the proposed revision directly to fuel-cost increases and the financial condition of the transport corporations, but the report does not provide details of their losses, operating costs or the scale of the fare increase being considered.

For passengers, the immediate uncertainty is the size and timing of any increase. Until the government announces its decision, existing fares remain the applicable fares. The November 3 meeting and the November 4 announcement are the next confirmed milestones in the process.

The government’s decision will establish whether fares are raised and, if so, the structure and implementation timeline of the revision. No further details on the proposed rates were announced in the report.
