The Kaleshwaram project resumed pumping Godavari water into Telangana’s Annapurna and Ranganayaka Sagar reservoirs on Saturday, a day after the Bharat Rashtra Samithi demanded government action to improve water availability in reservoirs. The operation is aimed at replenishing the two water bodies after concerns were raised about depleted storage and the impact on farmers.
Two pumps at the Annapurna pump house lifted about 6,400 cusecs of Godavari water into the Annapurna reservoir, according to Telangana Today. The reservoir has a total capacity of 3.5 TMC ft, while its current storage was reported at 1.6 TMC ft.
At the Ranganayaka Sagar pump house, one Kaleshwaram motor was used to lift nearly 3,300 cusecs into the reservoir. The report did not specify the reservoir’s current storage or the duration for which the pumping operations will continue.
The pumping began a day after former Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao wrote to Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy, expressing concern over the condition of reservoirs and the difficulties faced by the farming community. Harish Rao urged the Congress government to set aside political considerations and focus on farmers’ welfare.
In his letter, Harish Rao attributed the depleted reservoir levels to what he described as negligence by the Congress government towards farmers and their concerns. The allegation was made in the context of the BRS demand that the government ensure adequate water availability.
The latest operation links the immediate condition of the reservoirs to the functioning of the Kaleshwaram pumping system, which lifts Godavari water into storage facilities.
