As part of the nationwide rail modernisation drive, the reconstruction of Jodhpur railway station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is making swift progress.
The transformation of this heritage station, located in the heart of Rajasthan, is not just a structural facelift but a long-term vision to solve persistent civic challenges through sustainable infrastructure. With a budgetary allocation that now touches ₹10,000 crore for Rajasthan, the railway upgrade reaffirms the Centre’s focus on building equitable, accessible, and climate-resilient public spaces. The redevelopment blueprint of the Jodhpur station addresses key urbanisation challenges. A second entry point is being constructed to accommodate the city’s growing expansion, while an elevated road and extended parking areas are expected to relieve traffic congestion. The project also includes a spacious concourse, a modern roof plaza, and dedicated areas for local vendors selling regional delicacies such as makhan bhog and gulab jamun—thereby blending convenience with cultural vibrancy. This renewed focus on passenger-centric infrastructure reflects a people-first approach to urban mobility, positioning railway stations as community hubs rather than mere transit points.
Beyond passenger amenities, the region’s industrial ecosystem is also set to benefit. A cargo terminal is being planned near Bhagat Ki Kothi to streamline logistics for exporters. Given that Jodhpur is a key node in Rajasthan’s furniture and handicrafts industry, the terminal is expected to enhance export efficiency and strengthen economic resilience. With 84 railway stations in Rajasthan currently undergoing upgrades under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, the scale of transformation highlights a coordinated national effort to make rail travel smarter, greener, and more inclusive. While modernisation plans are on track, the shift from past practices is significant. Earlier governments were often accused of superficial upgrades that lacked long-term impact. In contrast, today’s projects emphasise future readiness, energy efficiency, and digital integration. The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme alone aims to redevelop more than 1,300 stations across India. Rajasthan features prominently, with 85 stations listed—including major junctions like Jaipur, Udaipur, and Ajmer.
These upgrades are being seen as essential catalysts in reshaping the mobility narrative across Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. As the Jodhpur station modernisation progresses, the emphasis remains on heritage conservation alongside state-of-the-art infrastructure.
