The Delhi Mumbai Expressway is entering its final stages of construction, with a substantial portion of the 1,386-kilometre economic corridor now complete and only a limited stretch remaining in Rajasthan. Progress on the strategically important Mukundra Hills twin tunnel has also advanced significantly, signalling another step towards creating one of India’s largest high-speed road infrastructure networks linking the country’s political and financial capitals. Officials overseeing the corridor indicate that nearly four-fifths of the expressway has already been completed, with the remaining work concentrated in select sections. In Rajasthan, construction has narrowed to a short unfinished stretch, while the twin tunnel through the Mukundra Hills near Kota is approaching completion. The tunnel is regarded as one of the project’s most technically demanding components due to its alignment through environmentally sensitive and geologically complex terrain.

The Delhi Mumbai Expressway is expected to transform freight movement and passenger travel across five states—Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra. By providing a controlled-access highway with modern engineering standards, the corridor aims to reduce travel time, improve logistics efficiency and strengthen connectivity between industrial clusters, manufacturing hubs, ports and emerging urban centres. Infrastructure analysts believe the expressway represents more than a transport project. It forms part of a broader strategy to enhance economic competitiveness by lowering logistics costs, encouraging industrial investment and supporting regional development along the corridor. Faster road connectivity can improve supply chain reliability for sectors including manufacturing, agriculture, warehousing and e-commerce, creating opportunities for new economic activity in districts connected to the route. The nearing completion of the Mukundra Hills tunnels also highlights advances in India’s highway engineering capabilities. Constructing large-scale tunnels within ecologically sensitive landscapes requires careful geological assessment, specialised construction techniques and environmental safeguards to minimise long-term impacts. Experts note that such infrastructure projects increasingly require balancing transport expansion with biodiversity conservation and climate resilience, particularly in areas containing protected forests and wildlife habitats.

Significant public investment has already been committed to the expressway, making it one of the country’s largest infrastructure programmes. Beyond reducing travel duration between Delhi and Mumbai, the corridor is expected to ease congestion on existing national highways, improve fuel efficiency through uninterrupted traffic flow and contribute to lower transport-related emissions by reducing idling and travel delays. However, sustainability experts emphasise that long-term environmental benefits will depend on responsible land management, green corridor development and integrated transport planning. As work progresses towards completion, attention will shift from civil construction to operational readiness, safety systems and connectivity with adjoining transport infrastructure. Urban planners suggest that the expressway’s full economic potential will be realised only if supported by multimodal logistics parks, urban planning reforms and sustainable development along the corridor.

With the remaining construction entering its final phase, the Delhi Mumbai Expressway is poised to become a critical national transport spine, strengthening mobility while shaping future patterns of economic growth and regional urbanisation across western and northern India.
