Jammu and Kashmir is taking significant steps towards developing inland water transport (IWT) systems along its major rivers, including the Jhelum, Chenab, and Ravi.
The Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir has formally requested technical and infrastructural support from the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) to expedite the establishment of IWT services in the region. During a high-level meeting held in Srinagar, the Chief Secretary emphasized the ecological and logistical advantages of water-based transportation. He highlighted that rivers such as the Jhelum, Chenab, and Ravi connect several key districts, offering a promising foundation for a sustainable public transport network. The introduction of IWT is seen as an efficient, environment-friendly, and cost-effective alternative to conventional road systems.
Representatives from IWAI presented preliminary survey findings conducted on major river stretches, identifying segments along the Jhelum, Chenab, and Ravi as feasible for inland water transport. The survey aligns with the Centre’s broader policy of promoting river navigation as a cleaner and less congested mode of transit. To initiate services, plans are being considered for deploying electric-powered cruise vessels with a seating capacity of around 20 passengers, operating between designated river terminals. This initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion, lower carbon emissions, and provide an alternative mode of transportation for residents and tourists alike.
The Chief Secretary called for a coordinated effort between IWAI and Jammu and Kashmir’s departments to develop the necessary infrastructure, including terminals and waterway access points. Emphasis was placed on coordination across the Tourism, Public Works Department (PWD), and Transport sectors. Additionally, the importance of ensuring the alignment of this initiative with local tourism development goals and improving connectivity in underserved areas was underscored. Departments have been directed to prepare a comprehensive implementation roadmap with strict timelines. The administration has reaffirmed its commitment to fast-tracking the project, with the dual aim of ecological sustainability and expanded mobility options for citizens and visitors alike.
This collaboration between Jammu and Kashmir and IWAI marks a significant step towards modernizing the region’s transport infrastructure, promoting sustainable development, and enhancing the overall travel experience for residents and tourists. The successful implementation of IWT services is expected to contribute to the economic development of the region and improve the quality of life for its inhabitants.
