Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway Reaches 8 Million Passengers, Boosts Services

The Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway, known as “Whoosh,” has reached a significant milestone, transporting over 8 million passengers since its commercial launch on October 17, 2023. This remarkable achievement highlights the growing demand for fast and efficient travel in Indonesia, especially between the bustling cities of Jakarta and Bandung.

The rapid success of Whoosh is backed by data from PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC), which shows the railway’s average occupancy rate stands at a solid 60.73%. On peak days, it has even reached a record-breaking 24,400 passengers in a single day. This surge in commuter demand led KCIC to increase the number of daily trips to 62 as of February 1, 2025. With trains departing every 30 minutes, Whoosh has become a reliable and fast alternative for both business and leisure travellers between the two cities. To accommodate the growing passenger base, KCIC has introduced the “Frequent Whoosher Card,” a subscription pass designed to provide commuters with greater flexibility and affordability. This initiative aims to make travel more accessible for frequent users, who can now enjoy discounted fares and the convenience of guaranteed seats on a busy line.

The journey between Jakarta and Bandung, which traditionally took over three hours by road or the existing railway line, now takes a mere 45 minutes thanks to the high-speed rail’s remarkable speed. The Whoosh trains, with a maximum operating speed of 350 km/h and a design speed of up to 420 km/h, hold the distinction of being the fastest commercial rail network in the Southern Hemisphere and Southeast Asia. The system has placed Indonesia among the global leaders in high-speed rail development, standing shoulder to shoulder with some of the fastest lines in China. To enhance the overall travel experience for passengers, KCIC has also introduced several new services. One such service is the shuttle bus connecting Halim Station with Pantai Indah Kapuk 2 (PIK2), a vibrant coastal destination in Jakarta. This addition is designed to make it easier for travellers from Bandung to explore the city’s beaches, culinary hotspots, and entertainment areas. Whether it’s for a weekend getaway or a quick exploration, these added conveniences make the journey all the more enjoyable.

Additionally, KCIC has opened its first official Whoosh merchandise store at Halim Station. The store allows passengers to purchase unique souvenirs, including apparel, accessories, and other memorabilia. “We want to create a more personalised and memorable travel experience for passengers,” said Eva Chairunisa, KCIC’s Corporate Secretary. These items, designed to celebrate the Whoosh experience, are sure to become popular among tourists and regular commuters alike. The Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway stands as a testament to Indonesia’s commitment to modernising its transportation infrastructure. As the only high-speed rail network in Southeast Asia and the Southern Hemisphere, it plays a crucial role in improving connectivity, reducing travel times, and supporting economic growth in the region. With the steady expansion of services and the introduction of new features to enhance the passenger experience, Whoosh is poised to continue its success for years to come.
