Jaipur’s Walled City Construction Gets Tighter Oversight with JMC-Heritage SOP

In response to a persistent issue of unauthorized construction within Jaipur’s historic Walled City, the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) Heritage has unveiled a robust Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) aimed at enhancing oversight and ensuring compliance with regulations.

With the Walled City being a designated UNESCO Heritage site, the introduction of this SOP marks a significant step towards preserving its architectural integrity while addressing the challenge of unauthorized structures. The newly implemented SOP, designed in accordance with the Walled City Building Bylaws 2020 and Walled City Building Regulations 2022, establishes a streamlined process for the approval of construction and repair activities within the area. Under these guidelines, strict timelines have been set for the issuance of construction approvals, with accountability measures in place to address any delays.

According to a senior official from JMC-Heritage, applications for construction or repair work will first be submitted to the zone deputy commissioner, initiating a thorough inspection and survey process. Subsequently, approvals will be granted based on compliance with the established building bylaws, ensuring adherence to heritage conservation norms and technical standards. To further bolster oversight, the SOP mandates spot inspections by designated officials, coupled with rigorous checks to verify plot ownership and lease agreements. Additionally, the heritage cell of the municipal corporation will conduct technical assessments to assess the structural integrity and historical significance of proposed constructions, ensuring alignment with preservation objectives.

The implementation of this SOP follows a recent incident wherein an illegally constructed building collapsed in the Kishanpole zone, underscoring the urgency of addressing unauthorized constructions within the Walled City. In response, JMC-Heritage has intensified its efforts to curb such activities, underscoring the commitment to safeguarding the cultural and architectural heritage of Jaipur’s iconic Walled City. By establishing clear guidelines and accountability mechanisms, the JMC-Heritage aims to mitigate the risks associated with unauthorized construction while facilitating responsible urban development within this historically significant area. The introduction of this SOP reflects a proactive approach towards preserving Jaipur’s rich cultural legacy for future generations.
