India’s First Electric Highway Pilot Project Underway in Nagpur

Nitin Gadkari, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister, has reiterated the government’s commitment to developing electric highways, emphasising their economic viability. His vision includes India’s first electric highway connecting Delhi and Jaipur. The first pilot project for an electric highway is underway in Nagpur, showcasing India’s commitment to sustainable transportation.

He outlined his vision for electric highways, with the NHAI granting the right of way for the project. He has been in discussions with the Power Ministry to negotiate electricity rates, aiming for INR 3.50 per unit compared to the commercial rate of INR 11 per unit.

Private sector investors would play a significant role in the development of electric highways. They would be responsible for the construction of electric cables, and NHAI would charge an electric tariff similar to tolls. Electric highways function similarly to railways, where power cables are provided for vehicles equipped with electric traction technology, allowing them to draw power while in motion.

The development of electric highways aligns with India’s goal of reducing its carbon footprint, promoting clean energy and advancing sustainable transportation infrastructure. As the country seeks innovative solutions to address its energy and environmental challenges, electric highways represent a promising step toward a greener future.
