Indian Railways is intensifying its preparedness protocols to safeguard passenger journeys and ensure the seamless operation of train services across the nation.
This proactive stance involves meticulous safety assessments of critical infrastructure, including vulnerable sections, bridges, and tunnels, with maintenance work being prioritised to mitigate potential disruptions caused by heavy rainfall. Across various zones, railway authorities are implementing comprehensive strategies to tackle monsoon-related challenges. In the South Central Railway zone, officials have affirmed the undertaking of rigorous safety checks and the adherence to Railway Board guidelines. A key focus remains on vulnerable areas prone to waterlogging, with instructions issued for the thorough cleaning and maintenance of side water drains and waterways. Furthermore, the provision of additional drainage infrastructure is being implemented to proactively prevent track flooding, a crucial step in maintaining uninterrupted train movement.
The Eastern Railway zone is also actively engaged in bolstering its monsoon resilience. Recognising locations historically susceptible to waterlogging, the railway is installing motor pumps to efficiently drain accumulated rainwater from tracks and associated infrastructure. Complementary efforts include the extensive desilting and cleaning of drains across different divisions, ensuring the unimpeded flow of rainwater. Culverts at various points along the network are also being cleared to facilitate the smooth passage of water. In the Northern Railway zone, a significant aspect of the preparedness involves addressing potential hazards posed by vegetation. Tree pruning, cutting, and trimming are actively in progress to remove branches that could obstruct drivers’ visibility or pose a risk of falling onto tracks during strong winds. This preemptive measure is vital for ensuring both the safety of train operations and the punctuality of services.
To further enhance responsiveness during the monsoon, the railway network has established round-the-clock Control Room Operations. These centralised hubs will facilitate close monitoring of conditions and enable the dissemination of timely updates, allowing for swift action in response to any emerging issues. For passengers utilising the Konkan Railway, a specific monsoon timetable will be in effect from June 15 to October 20. Consequently, the timings of 23 pairs of trains operating on Western Railway routes will undergo revisions during this period. This adjustment is a necessary measure to account for the altered operational conditions typically encountered during the monsoon in the region.
Collectively, these multi-pronged efforts across different railway zones underscore a unified commitment to prioritising passenger safety and ensuring the continuity of rail services throughout the monsoon season.
