India Faces Heavy Rainfall Across 15 States This Week

India is bracing for a week-long spell of heavy rainfall as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues alerts for multiple states starting today. While monsoon rains continue to drench regions where the season has established itself, other parts of the country still contend with soaring temperatures.

The widespread precipitation is expected to significantly impact daily life, infrastructure, and agriculture, prompting authorities and citizens to prepare for the upcoming weather onslaught. Heavy rainfall is forecast from June 15 to June 21 in at least 15 states, with regions along the western and southern coasts among the first to experience intense showers. Coastal Kerala, Lakshadweep, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka are expected to witness heavy rains accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h. This early monsoon activity signals a vigorous progression of the season, promising relief from the prior dry spell but also raising concerns about waterlogging and flash floods in vulnerable urban and rural areas.

The western states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Konkan, and Goa will see sporadic heavy rainfall primarily between June 15 and 19, with isolated downpours intensifying in Gujarat towards the latter half of this period. Meanwhile, eastern and central India are also on alert: Odisha and Chhattisgarh are slated for heavy showers from mid-June, while Vidarbha, West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Jharkhand, and parts of Madhya Pradesh will experience heavy rains into the third week of June. The northern Himalayan states of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh will also feel the impact with heavy rain forecasts spanning June 15 to 21. These conditions, coupled with thunderstorms and strong winds, heighten the risk of landslides and flash flooding, necessitating heightened vigilance.

Light to moderate rainfall will continue across many adjoining regions, including coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Telangana, and parts of Karnataka. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and winds gusting between 30 and 50 km/h are anticipated. Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha are expected to receive scattered showers with occasional thunderstorms throughout this period. Delhi and surrounding areas will experience intermittent light to moderate rain with thunderstorms over the coming days, offering some respite from the intense pre-monsoon heat. However, the capital should brace for sudden bursts of heavy rain and gusty winds which may disrupt routine activities.

Rajasthan’s weather presents a mixed scenario. Thunderstorms with winds reaching 70 km/h are expected in several locations. The state’s eastern regions could see heavy downpours around June 15 and again on June 20-21, potentially bringing much-needed relief from the ongoing heatwave but also posing flood risks in low-lying zones. The unfolding meteorological patterns underscore the complexity of India’s monsoon system this year. As rainfall intensifies, urban centres and rural communities alike face challenges related to water management, transportation disruption, and health concerns from flooding and stagnant water. The forecast serves as a critical reminder of the need for sustainable urban planning and infrastructure resilient to extreme weather events.

With climate change increasingly influencing monsoon variability, such heavy rainfall episodes may become more frequent and intense. Policymakers and urban planners must prioritise eco-friendly, climate-resilient infrastructure while ensuring equitable access to resources and emergency services. Public awareness campaigns encouraging safe practices during storms and flood events remain essential. The coming week’s weather is a vital test for preparedness and adaptation across multiple states, spotlighting the ongoing balance between India’s development aspirations and the pressing need for sustainable, climate-sensitive urban and rural environments.
