India is rapidly transforming from a net importer to a formidable player in the global solar energy market.
With ambitious plans to scale up domestic production, the country aims to meet its growing energy demands while reducing reliance on foreign imports and contributing to global sustainability efforts. The government’s push for self-reliance in solar energy is evident in its target to increase solar photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturing capacity from 80 gigawatts (GW) to 125 GW by 2030. This expansion is supported by initiatives like the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which encourages domestic manufacturing and reduces dependence on imported components
Despite these efforts, challenges persist. India’s solar cell manufacturing capacity is set to increase five-fold to 55 GW by 2026-27, but the country still imports a significant portion of its raw materials, including polysilicon and wafers. The dominance of Chinese suppliers in the global supply chain poses a hurdle to achieving complete energy independence. To address these challenges, India is focusing on building a robust domestic supply chain. States like Tamil Nadu are leading the way by attracting investments in solar manufacturing facilities. For instance, Tata Power has established a 4.3 GW solar module and cell manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu, prioritizing the domestic market despite the lucrative export opportunities.
The expansion of solar manufacturing is also creating employment opportunities, particularly for women. In Tamil Nadu, thousands of women are employed in solar panel factories, contributing to both economic growth and gender equality in the workforce. These jobs not only provide financial independence but also empower women to pursue education and career aspirations. India’s solar export market is also witnessing growth. The country has become a significant supplier of solar modules to the United States, benefiting from favorable trade policies and the global shift towards diversifying supply chains away from China.
However, the path to energy independence is not without its obstacles. The country faces challenges such as a shortage of skilled workers in the renewable energy sector, which could impede the growth of solar manufacturing. Addressing this skills gap through education and training programs is crucial for sustaining the momentum in solar energy development.
