IMD Predicts Increased Rain Activity Over Next 3 Days in Mumbai

Mumbai: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the onset of monsoon over Mumbai, stating that the conditions have met the necessary criteria for such a declaration. IMD officials have indicated that rainfall activity is expected to pick up over the next two to three days, driven by the gradual strengthening of westerly winds associated with the southwest monsoon.

“For declaring the onset of the monsoon, at least three to four locations should record over 2.5mm of rain, and the westerly winds should be strong. With the strengthening of these winds, we anticipate an increase in rainfall activity across parts of Maharashtra in the coming days. Rainfall is expected to persist until June 14, after which the situation will be closely monitored,” an IMD Mumbai official stated.

In the 12-hour period from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm on the day of the announcement, both the Colaba and Santacruz observatories recorded 0.2mm of rainfall. This minimal initial rainfall meets the threshold for the onset declaration but suggests that more substantial rain is imminent.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been proactive in its monsoon preparedness efforts, completing 75% of desilting work before the onset of the monsoon. According to BMC officials, an additional 15% of desilting is undertaken during the monsoon season, with the remaining 10% conducted post-monsoon. This year, the BMC has adhered to this schedule, ensuring that the city’s drainage systems are as ready as possible for the increased rainfall.

The announcement of the monsoon’s arrival brings relief and anticipation for Mumbai’s residents, who rely on the seasonal rains for water supply but also prepare for the challenges that heavy rains can bring, such as flooding and traffic disruptions. The IMD’s forecast provides crucial information for both city planners and residents to brace for the upcoming weather conditions.

With the gradual increase in rainfall activity expected, the focus now shifts to monitoring and managing the impact of the monsoon. Authorities will keep a close watch on rainfall patterns and take necessary measures to mitigate any adverse effects, ensuring that Mumbai can navigate the monsoon season with minimal disruption.

As the city enters this crucial period, the collaborative efforts of the IMD and BMC highlight the importance of preparedness and responsive action in managing Mumbai’s annual monsoon.
