Hyderabad’s First Unmanned Substation Adds Eight Feeders

Hyderabad’s first unmanned 33/11 kV substation has been commissioned in the Old City, with the new STP Attapur facility adding eight 11 kV feeders to the local electricity distribution network. Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) said the facility has been charged and brought into service in the Charminar division.

Built at a cost of ₹14.38 crore, the substation is intended to improve the quality and reliability of power supply for consumers in the surrounding areas. Its commissioning adds a new distribution asset to a dense and heavily serviced part of Hyderabad, where the reliability of local electricity infrastructure directly affects homes, businesses and public services.

TGSPDCL identified the facility as the first unmanned substation in Hyderabad. Unlike a conventional staffed substation, an unmanned facility is operated and monitored without permanent personnel stationed on site, although the report does not provide details of the control, monitoring or maintenance systems being used at STP Attapur.

The substation will distribute power through eight 11 kV feeders. Feeders are outgoing distribution lines that carry electricity from a substation to local service areas. By adding these eight feeders, the new facility strengthens the network’s ability to supply electricity across the surrounding parts of the Charminar division, according to TGSPDCL.

The company said the project would facilitate improved electricity services for consumers in the region. The report does not specify the number of consumers expected to benefit, the areas covered by each feeder, or whether the new substation is connected to any feeder-separation, load-balancing or outage-response programme.

The commissioning comes as electricity distribution in established urban areas depends not only on generation capacity but also on the availability and configuration of local substations and feeders. A substation can act as an important link between the wider distribution system and neighbourhood-level supply, while the number and arrangement of feeders determine how power is routed to local service areas.

For residents and establishments in the surrounding Old City areas, the immediate significance of the project is the expansion of local distribution capacity. However, the available information does not establish whether consumers will experience a measurable reduction in outages, voltage fluctuations or restoration times. Those outcomes will depend on how the new facility is operated and how its eight feeders are integrated with the existing network.

TGSPDCL has said the STP Attapur substation is now in service. Further operational details, including the precise service area, monitoring arrangements and performance indicators, were not provided in the report.
