HYDERABAD: Hyderabad’s water utility is preparing an emergency strategy to safeguard drinking water supplies as uncertainty over inflows into the Singur and Manjira reservoirs raises concerns about water availability during the current season. The move reflects growing emphasis on climate-resilient urban water management as expanding cities face increasingly unpredictable rainfall patterns and rising demand from households and businesses.

Officials have been directed to prepare a comprehensive contingency framework assessing reservoir-wise water availability, projected demand and possible supply gaps if expected inflows fail to replenish storage levels. The plan is expected to identify alternative sources capable of maintaining uninterrupted drinking water services while minimising disruptions across the metropolitan region. The Hyderabad water supply strategy includes evaluating the potential to draw additional water from the Krishna, Godavari and Mission Bhagiratha networks. Technical assessments will also examine the infrastructure required to support emergency transfers, including new interconnections, pumping facilities, valves, pipelines and distribution adjustments that would allow water to be redirected to areas dependent on the Singur and Manjira systems. Urban water experts note that diversifying supply sources has become increasingly important for rapidly growing metropolitan regions. Reliance on a limited number of reservoirs exposes cities to greater risks during delayed monsoons or below-average rainfall, making integrated regional water networks a critical component of long-term resilience.

Authorities have also sought a scientific review of the city’s water balance, incorporating reservoir storage, daily withdrawals, transmission losses and minimum drinking water requirements. Experts believe transparent publication of verified water availability data can reduce misinformation during periods of uncertainty while enabling more informed planning by both authorities and consumers. Alongside supply planning, operational measures are being intensified to improve water access across the city. The utility has instructed field teams to eliminate pending tanker service backlogs through additional vehicle deployment, extended operating hours and better coordination among filling stations. Consumer complaints related to water quality have also been prioritised, with faster response mechanisms and alternative supply arrangements where contamination affects regular distribution. Rainwater harvesting has emerged as another major focus within the city’s preparedness strategy. Officials are accelerating monitoring of rooftop harvesting systems and encouraging large residential developments to strengthen groundwater recharge infrastructure. Urban planners say capturing rainwater locally can reduce dependence on distant reservoirs while improving groundwater sustainability in densely built neighbourhoods.

Looking beyond the immediate season, the utility has initiated planning for updated water supply and sewerage master plans extending to 2035 and 2047. These long-term strategies are expected to address population growth, network expansion, infrastructure modernisation and climate adaptation requirements. The evolving Hyderabad water supply plan highlights the growing importance of proactive resource management in Indian cities. As climate variability places increasing pressure on conventional water sources, investments in diversified supply systems, efficient distribution and decentralised water conservation are expected to play a defining role in securing reliable urban water services for the future.
