In response to escalating temperatures and increasing public demand for accessible drinking water, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has unveiled a pioneering initiative to deploy 200 free water kiosks, or ‘Chali Vendrams’, throughout the city.

This strategic move comes as part of the Board’s proactive measures to address the challenges posed by the scorching summer heat and ensure the well-being of Hyderabad’s residents. Under the dynamic leadership of HMWSSB’s Managing Director, C. Sudarshan Reddy, and his seasoned team, the inauguration of two such water kiosks at Mehdipatnam and near Basavatarakam marks the commencement of an expansive network aimed at serving pedestrians, daily workers, and road users at prominent junctions across Hyderabad. These strategically located kiosks are poised to provide essential hydration to the masses, particularly during peak hours of activity and transit.
In a bid to bolster operational efficiency and expedite service delivery, the Board has enlisted the support of 200 drivers from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), with a significant portion already deployed for duty. Moreover, recognising the imperative of prompt response, HMWSSB has procured an additional 365 mild-steel tanker shells from reputable suppliers, notwithstanding challenges in immediate availability, notably with vehicles from Eicher.
Despite logistical hurdles, the Board remains steadfast in its commitment to enhancing water accessibility and expediting response times. To this end, measures are underway to streamline tanker operations, including the pooling of resources from neighbouring districts to augment the existing fleet. With a targeted aim of supplying drinking water within a swift 12-hour window from the time of booking, HMWSSB is poised to revolutionise service standards and bolster community resilience against water scarcity. As Hyderabad braces for the rigors of summer, HMWSSB’s ambitious endeavour to establish 200 free water kiosks stands as a testament to proactive governance and unwavering dedication to public welfare. By leveraging innovative solutions and strategic partnerships, the Board reaffirms its pivotal role in safeguarding the city’s water security and ensuring equitable access to this vital resource for all its inhabitants.
