The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has fined Anaganaga hotel in Jubilee Hills Rs 20,000 for wasting water while cleaning its premises, following an intervention by the board’s managing director, K. Ashok Reddy.
According to a report by Deccan Chronicle, Reddy noticed water being wasted at the hotel on Road Number 45 while travelling through Jubilee Hills. He directed officials to issue a notice to the establishment and impose a fine. HMWS&SB officials subsequently collected the penalty from the hotel management.
The action places water-use enforcement at the centre of Hyderabad’s urban utilities agenda. The board said the water being used indiscriminately for cleaning premises and roads represented a misuse of a valuable natural resource. The report does not specify the quantity of water wasted, the duration of the activity or the particular rule under which the Rs 20,000 penalty was imposed.
Reddy said protecting water resources was a responsibility shared by all residents and establishments. He advised people to avoid excessive water use, particularly for activities such as cleaning buildings and roads, where consumption can be reduced through more controlled practices.
The warning extends beyond the hotel involved in the action. The HMWS&SB managing director said that misuse or wastage of water resources, including drinking water, would invite action under the applicable rules. The statement indicates that the board intends to treat avoidable water wastage as an enforcement issue rather than only as a matter of public advice.
For Hyderabad’s commercial establishments, the incident underlines the operational responsibility attached to using the city’s piped water supply. Hotels, restaurants and other premises routinely use water for cleaning and maintenance, but the board’s action signals that such use can attract penalties when officials identify it as excessive or indiscriminate.
The report does not indicate whether Anaganaga hotel contested the notice or whether the HMWS&SB has announced a wider inspection drive across Jubilee Hills. It also does not provide details of additional cases or the schedule for any future enforcement action. The board’s stated position is that further instances of water misuse will be dealt with according to the rules.
